The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially verified the registration of Erisco Food Limited in Nigeria, affirming its compliance with NAFDAC regulations.
Regarding the ongoing dispute involving a customer of Erisco Food Limited, Chioma Egodi Jnr, who purchased Nagiko Tomako Mix, the matter has escalated to social media. The company deemed her public product review as damaging to its reputation and subsequently apprehended her.
Chioma Egodi Jnr reviewed the product on Facebook as follows, “I went to buy Tin tomatoes yesterday that I will use to make stew, I didn’t see Gino and Sonia, so I decided to buy this (referring to Erisco tomato) when I opened it, I decided to taste it omo! Sugar is just too much! Haa Biko let me know if you have used thin Tin tomato before because this is an ike gwuru situation!”.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an official statement verifying the tomato mix’s registration status, which includes an assigned registration number.
A post from NAFDAC’s X Twitter account states “The product in question – Nagiko Tomato Mix by Erisco Foods Limited with NAFDAC Registration Number A8-7430 is a registered product
“The product is not yet on our database due to a significant backlog. We are actively updating the Registered Products Database and addressing the backlog.
“The formulation of tomato paste and ketchup products with sugar is safe for consumption. Sugar is added to these products for a number of reasons, including but not limited to masking bitterness, enhancing colour and flavour, improving texture and taste consistency, and
as a preservative. The safety limits of sugar in food products are determined by NAFDAC, and only sugar-containing products within these safety limits are approved by NAFDAC”
Many concerned Nigerians have criticized Erisco Food Limited for apprehending the young woman who reviewed their product. In response, some legal professionals have taken it upon themselves to provide legal representation for the lady in court.
Additionally, Erisco Food Limited has demanded that the lady issue an apology on her Facebook account within a specified timeframe.
