On Monday, in a ruling delivered by Hon. Judge Ibironke Harrison, Mr Drambi Vandi, a police officer who shot a pregnant lawyer in Lagos on Christmas Day, was declared guilty of murder and subsequently sentenced to death by hanging by the Lagos State High Court.
“The court found the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the neck till you are dead,” the report stated.
On Christmas Day in 2022, a tragic event unfolded at the Ajah roundabout in Lagos when Policeman Drambi Vandi shot Mrs Bolanle Raheem, who was also pregnant.
Following this incident, the policeman was suspended due to his unprofessional conduct, which subsequently led to his prosecution in court.
The family of the deceased pursued justice and took their case to court, while the state government agreed to charge the policeman with a single count of murder.
However, the court proceedings began in January when the family of the deceased submitted evidence to the court. Policeman Drambi Vandi said that the fatal bullet that claimed the life of Mrs Raheem, who was expecting a child, did not originate from his firearm.
